History of Copa America – A Foremost Soccer Event of the world 

Copa America literally means “America’s Cup” in Spanish and Portuguese language. The history of Copa America dates back to 1867 when the first recorded association football match in South America was played in Argentina by British railway workers. Since then it has gone thru many disruptions and grow periods too. By early 20th century, Football was gaining vast popularity in the continent. Consequently, CONMEBOL i.e. South American Football Confederation was founded on 9th July, 1916 (Independence Day of Argentina) and since 1975 this is the governing body of football association in South America organizing Copa America tournaments. 12 nations will be contesting the Copa America 2016. These 12 teams will be playing at various venues in Chile over duration of one month during June 2016. They are segregated in three groups i.e. Group A, B and C as under:-

Format of Copa America Cup 2016 Football Tournament 

The tournament will be played among 3 groups consisting of 12 nations in sequence of quarter-finals, semi-finals, the third-place match and the final. The first rounds often known as robin-rounds will be played among teams of the same group.

After the group play matches with the fellow group mates, the best two teams from each group as well as the best two 3rd place teams advance into the quarterfinals. Quarterfinals winners advance into semi-finals. The third-place match is contested by the losing semi-finalists. Each team or nation will play three matches against other teams of the same group. The top two teams from each group i.e. A, B and C will reach the knockout stage as well as the two best third-place teams.

Winners of Semi Finals play in the final match to decide the champion. The winning team also earns a right to participate or play the Confederation Cup 2017 hosted by Russia.

In the Knock out Stage (including the final), if a match was level at the end, extra time of two periods would be played. If the scores are still level after extra time, the match will be decided by a penalty shootout.

Schedule of Copa America 2016 Centenario

The event is of much significance for Chile besides being a host country. For the first time Chile is sincerely staging an international sport event and the country is using this opportunity at its utmost to showcase Chile to the world and marking its presence across the globe at its utmost.
